Text-in-Context Proposal

Text: Ali Smith’s Autumn
Context: Francis Bacon’s “Three Figures and Portrait” (1975), currently on display at the Tate Modern

Francis Bacon, “Three Figures and Portrait” (1975)

I propose to explore the intimacy and suffering Elisabeth finds in her relationship with Daniel. I would focus this essay on Elisabeth’s expectations interact with the reality of the relationship in adulthood. I will interact with some combination of the following sections: when Elisabeth reflects on her failed relationship, when Daniel notes love is felt toward other people’s perspectives, and Elisabeth watching the sleeping Daniel.

I think this work will highlight the pain that Elisabeth feels when she realizes that Daniel does not share her feelings. Like Elisabeth, the contorted figure on the left leans in, making great sacrifice toward the figure on the right and center. The figure on the right, however, leans outward, and toward the shared center figure. The rightward figure bends naturally and carefully compared to the left. The frame is a nearly balanced depiction of spontaneity. However, it reflects motions, suggesting it cannot remain this way. A portrait hangs watches the interaction between the two figures from a removed space— like Elisabeth’s mother. The color scheme is a monotone palette of sickening beiges. The golden leading line, circles around the rightward figure, drawing the eye back to the figure on the left.

Unrelated follow-up: Yes, Francis Bacon is in fact British.
